Although we’d met on the internet and only exchanged a few emails, when she told me she was going to be in town for one night on business I jumped at the chance to meet her. As few days later, raw treats in hand and a flutter in my chest, I walked into an inner city hotel lobby and there she was – this pint sized pocket rocket. Before I could even say “hello” she had bounded over to me, wrapping me in the biggest, warmest bear hug.
No this isn’t the story of one of my recent online dating conquests, but in fact the strange circumstances in which I first met Olivia O’Connor. That night we spoke without a moment of silence, filling each other in one every little crevice of our lives. With her adorable laugh and engaging Cali accent, Liv had me hooked from the get go.
She’s a devotee of fun, adventure and exploration (for Liv, nothing is off limits!). She’s committed to following her dreams and inspiring others to do so too. And in the name of dream-chasing, this amazing woman has recently launched a line of Hats with a Purpose™, proceeds from each purchase helping to make a young person’s dream a reality.
Yep, Liv is one cool chick.
Now let’s get to know her more intimately, shall we?
How does what you do for moolah allow you to connect with your soul/spirit/God/ Divinity/ The Universe?
I feel the most connected when I’m being myself and having fun. I never thought about having a hat brand but looking back at different experiences where I was having the time of my life with a backwards hat on makes me feel like this has been in the works for awhile. The brand is called DontTellSummer, and they are Hats with a Purpose™, to inspire you to do what you would love to do now, rather than waiting for some point in the future. Every time you put on the hat, it’s a declaration to live an authentic, rad life. Whether that’s saying yes to going for a surf that day, or to a dream that’s been sitting in your heart, they are here as a reminder to do what you love, what completely excites you.
I feel connected when I listen to the that rad feeling of going for something that you’d love to do. It can sometimes be easy for us to tell ourselves that we can go for something that we would love to do later on in life, but the more we say yes to those experiences, the more that becomes our way of life.
I also feel the most connected to the Universe when I’m not only out there doing what I love, but when other rad young souls are out there doing what they love. I had the idea for DontTellSummer to sponsor other inspired young people to go and do what they would love to do now – a portion of every purchase goes back to a young person with a big dream.
Describe when you feel your most spiritual?
I feel the most spiritual when I trust my heart; when I act on things that I would love to do even if there is no evidence that it will work out, but yet I feel supported and have a knowing that it will. I feel my most spiritual when people or experiences come in that feel meant to be; those gives-you-chills, totally-heart-driven type of things that lead you on a path that you didn’t know existed and you look up and think, I couldn’t have planned this better if I tried.
Describe when you feel your most human?
I feel the most human when I’m with my friends. I love that feeling of being completely out of your head, into your heart and laughing at the top of your lungs with old friends, new friends and people you just met that day. Just experiencing life with other human beings is when I feel the most human.
How important is it for you to harmonise both of these elements (the human & the spiritual) in your life? What kind of things do you do to embrace both sides?
Be true to who you are, trust in the universe and enjoy planet earth. I’ve gone in and out of “spiritual” times in my life; those times where it feels like everywhere you look and everything you do all comes back somehow to a spiritual quest. Those times have been so consuming that I would come out of them wanting to hide my books, blogs, podcasts and anything that had to do with being spiritual. I would then slide back into living more of the ‘human’ aspect and by the time I was totally grooved in, I would feel pulled to learning more and embracing my spiritual side. Now I’ve been learning to balance the two by discovering what being spiritual means to me. I feel spiritual when I’m out having fun, following my heart and being connected to those around me and the Universe. I realized that just living out my truth is when I feel connected, free and me.
What’s your favourite feeling to have at the end of the day, when you’re tucked up in bed, about to close your eyes and drift off into the unknown?
Excitement. 100%. I love going to bed and getting that feeling where you are so excited for what’s to come, whether it’s the next day or an unspecified time, I just love the feeling when you go bed being like I feel excited about the present and excited about the future.
Can you give us the deets on the kind of things you do/ what your day looks like when you’re left with this “oh-my-gosh-that-was-such-a-killer-day” feeling?
I love those days when you don’t plan a thing. You wake up, get a text from your friend who has asked if you want to go to the beach, and you go to the beach totally open to what you’ll do that day. You continue to to do what excites you throughout the day with a friend that is totally on the same page. All of a sudden you come across fun experiences that couldn’t have been planned better if you tried; you just allowed the day to keep rolling.
My favourite open-eyed meditation is…. “The love in me salutes the love in you.”
And that, my friends, is the fantastically wonderful Liv O’Connor.
